Narrative reasoning is the work of understanding a patient’s story — their experience of illness, what it means to them, the beliefs and context they bring — and being moved by it to act. Students and new graduates often find this difficult and fall back on the biomedical, which is a reasonable place to hide and a poor place to practise from.
